O' Tannenbaum~ Getting Wonky

Tannenbaum 3~ Getting Wonky

November 13, 2021     1:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Instructor: Johnnie McKenzie

This pattern is an adaptation of Tree’s Up! Lights On! published by Pieces from My Heart. It can be made with templates or paper pieced and it’s an easy tree to improv. There’s no right or wrong way to go wonky. You can use high contrast fabrics, focused color palette or go scrappy. One technique you can choose from is to stack fat quarters and rotary cut the individual components for traditional piecing. Then you can mix up the fabrics if you want to go scrappy. You would need at least 4 tree fabrics (9”x13” rectangle) and 4 for background fabrics (9”x13”) if you choose this technique.

Materials List:

The class materials listed are estimates based on a four-block table runner.

  • Holiday fabrics (selection of fat quarters or yardage)
  • Half-yard of background fabric (can be scrappy also).
  • A small amount of brown for the tree trunk.
  • Sewing machine and basic sewing and quilting tools (28mm rotary cutter, cutting ruler, cutting mat, etc.).

Instructor Bio: Quilting has been an important part of my life for over 70 years. I made quilts with my mother, quilts of necessity. I made quilts for my family and friends, quilts of love and celebration. As an adult, I became driven by advanced techniques and patterns and was influenced by master quilters like Jinny Beyer. After I retired in 2008 from a career in IT communications and education, I had the time to expand my traditional quilting skills into modern designs. From there, I began exploring many fiber art techniques and for the last ten years I have enjoyed designing most of my pieces. Color, texture, nature, geometry, and yes, even math, have been the main foundation elements in my recent work. I was selected as the Artist in Residence for Q1 2021 by the Blue Ridge Mountains Arts Association. No matter the material, no matter the design, no matter the quality of workmanship, the success of each piece is always the joy of the process.
