O' Tannenbaum~ Three Christmas Trees

Tannenbaum 4~ Three Christmas Trees

December 4, 2021     1:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Instructor: Johnnie McKenzie

This workshop requires a bit of paper piecing experience. It is also a good opportunity to use solid fabrics for both blocks. You can choose one of the two blocks: Trio Christmas Tree (vertical curved trees) or Flying North (Tree with north pointing triangle in the center).

Trio Christmas Tree, the vertical table runner shown on the far right, is a free download and you will be given the link in class to save your own pattern for future use. However, a pattern will be provided in the class for paper piecing. The blocks are 7”x12”.

The Flying North block with the north pointing triangle is also a paper pieced pattern. It is a 12”x12” block. Paper piecing patterns for three blocks are included in the class.

Materials List:

The class materials listed are estimates based on a three-block table runner.

Flying North:

  •          Six or seven shades of green (fat quarters or strips at least 4” wide)
  •          Half-yard of background fabric. The sample block uses several shades of gray and a small strip of white.
  •          A small amount of brown for the tree trunks.
  •          Sewing machine and basic sewing and quilting tools (28mm rotary cutter, cutting ruler, cutting mat, etc.).

Instructor Bio: Quilting has been an important part of my life for over 70 years. I made quilts with my mother, quilts of necessity. I made quilts for my family and friends, quilts of love and celebration. As an adult, I became driven by advanced techniques and patterns and was influenced by master quilters like Jinny Beyer. After I retired in 2008 from a career in IT communications and education, I had the time to expand my traditional quilting skills into modern designs. From there, I began exploring many fiber art techniques and for the last ten years I have enjoyed designing most of my pieces. Color, texture, nature, geometry, and yes, even math, have been the main foundation elements in my recent work. I was selected as the Artist in Residence for Q1 2021 by the Blue Ridge Mountains Arts Association. No matter the material, no matter the design, no matter the quality of workmanship, the success of each piece is always the joy of the process.
