Temperature Quilt Class~ Session 1 Virtual Meeting

Temperature Quilt Class with Johnnie McKenzie

Virtual Meeting  November 9, 2021  6:00pm - 8:00pm

A temperature quilt always brings a smile to my face. However, many of us don’t want to create 365 blocks as the year moves forward, even one day at a time. I use the same concepts and techniques used to create a 365-day temperature quilt to make smaller pieces that mark special events such as birthdays and anniversaries.

Since there are multiple strategies for a temperature quilt project, this class is divided into two sessions. The first session will be online (virtual). You will receive a link to the online meeting a few days prior to the class. In this session, you will learn:

  • Where to find historical climate data and capture current data
  • What climate data to include such as high and low temperatures, precipitation, wind velocity, humidity, etc.
  • How to create a range of values based on the data
  • How location and “normal” temperatures affect your color choices
  • How to choose a block
  • How to view the data to make color and fabric choices
  • How to download the data into a spreadsheet and manipulate the data to determine approximately how much fabric you will need. The instructor will give you as much help as you need to do this since not everyone is a spreadsheet user.
  • How many colors to use
  • How to create your construction “road map” which specifies the color/fabric for each temperature range
  • Possible layouts based on the number of blocks you choose to make
  • How to choose a block and quilt structure. Block choices can range from a simple one-seam goose to a bit more complex with curved piecing. Some blocks that can be easily fused will also be covered. Patterns for the block you choose will be provided.

Be sure to sign up for Session 2: Temperature Quilt Class Sit & Sew.
---Johnnie will be at the CQS to help you with your fabric choices and data roadmap. Check the class listing for more details.  There are two options available for you to choose from. Six students per session so sign up for the date that works best quickly.

Instructor Bio: Quilting has been an important part of my life for over 70 years. I made quilts with my mother, quilts of necessity. I made quilts for my family and friends, quilts of love and celebration. As an adult, I became driven by advanced techniques and patterns and was influenced by master quilters like Jinny Beyer. After I retired in 2008 from a career in IT communications and education, I had the time to expand my traditional quilting skills into modern designs. From there, I began exploring many fiber art techniques and for the last ten years I have enjoyed designing most of my pieces. Color, texture, nature, geometry, and yes, even math, have been the main foundation elements in my recent work. But no matter the material, no matter the design, no matter the quality of workmanship, the success of each piece is always the joy of the process.
